She was granted asylum in Canada, living there until her death. Hegazi was born to an Egyptian conservative middle-class family; she is the eldest of four siblings. Sarah helped her mother to care for her siblings after her father, a highschool science teacher, passed away. Pictures of a young Hegazi in conservative Islamic garb including a Hijab surfaced after her death. Hegazi identified as a communist and supported the Bread and Freedom Party while living in Egypt, and became involved with the Spring Socialist Network once in Canada.
Both her parents are Jewish. Gilbert has four older half-siblings. In , Sara took the last name Gilbert for Paul Gilbert , her mother's first husband. Gilbert also has two siblings on her father's side, sister Patrice and brother Joseph.
